"James McGrory, Glasgow Celtic's centre forward performed a unique feat on Saturday, when, in his club's league match with Dunfermline Athletic, he scored eight goals, exceeding by two the record of six goals jointly held by R.S.McColl ( Queens Park ), David Brown ( Dundee ) and Laurie McBain  Queens Park )  Mcgrory really scored nine goals, but the ninth, netted in the closing minutes of the game, was dissallowed for offside, a decision the spectators resentfully questioned. Rain fell throughout the game and the conditions were depressing but McGrory lost no time in getting to work. In two minutes he smartly netted a a connolly cross and immediately and exactly repeated the feat. Soon he butted a header so forcibly that the Fife goalkeeper, although clutching the ball, couldn'y hold it. For his fourth McGrory had to elude the bodyguard which had now formed to watch him and very cleverly he steered the ball into scoring position and booked it home.

Alec Thompson then went through alone and made the total five.

In the second half, the Celtic players visibly set themselves to give McGrory every chance to beat the record and, spon fed by his comrades, Jimmy enraptured the crowd with goals five, six, seven and Eight. When his seventh goal was scored, and the old record broken, the crowd went wild with joy and exultant cheering lasted for several minutes, while the Celtic players surrounded their hero and warmly congratulated him on his brilliant feat. For scoring openings, the old St Roch's leader, who is still a mere boy and a very modest and likeable youth, owes much to Connolly and Jimmy McStay as also to McInally, McLean and Frank Doyle who worked like Trojans to plant the ball where McGrory could make good use of it."
